Hansapank dies, Swedbank is born

Today, the first Estonian bank, Hansapank, will officially change names to become Swedbank. The Swedish bank owns 100% of its Estonian subsidiary, which will be rebranded in an effort to unify its activities in the Baltics. This strategic step will cost approximately EEK 150 000 000 (euro 10 million) and the first step will be the visual rebranding of the main offices in Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius. The legal name of the bank will change in spring 2009 and the process of changing brand will be finished during the autumn 2009.

One can wonder of the real necessity of such strategic decision. Swedbank is going more global when it is everyday more necessary to be more local and adapt to the local market. Hansapank was a very well-established brand in Estonia, it takes years to build a brand image and Swedbank will destroy that huge work today. To me it is a big mistake, but the future only will tell...

Hansabank est mort, vive le roi Swedbank

Aujourd'hui, Hansabank (première banque estonienne) devient officiellement Swedbank. Dans le but d'unifier ses activités, Swedbank, qui contrôle 100% d'Hansabank, va renommer sa filiale dans les Etats Baltes (Hansabankas en Letonie et Hansabanka en Lituanie). Ceci devrait coûter la bagatelle de 10 millions d'euros et la première étape sera la transformation visuelle des principaux bureaux à Tallinn, Riga et Vilnius. Le nom légale de la banque changera au printemps 2009 et le processus s'achèvera à l'automne.

On peut se questionner sur l'utilité d'une telle décision stratégique. Swedbank devient plus global alors que la tendance est plutôt à l'adaptation au marché local. Hansabank est une marque extrêmement appréciée et établie en Estonie et Swedbank va détruire des années de marketing en une seule journée. Selon moi, c'est une grossière erreur mais seul le futur nous le dira...
