Estonian monthly gross salary goes down

Since 1993, it is the first time Estonia faces this phenomenon. The average gross salary has decreased in the first quarter of 2009.
According to Statistics Estonia, the average monthly gross wage amounted to EEK 12,147 (€776) and the hourly gross wages to EEK 76.53 (€4.89). The average gross wages were EEK 12,207 in January, EEK 11,884 in February and EEK 12,373 in March.

Compared to the first quarter of 2008, the average monthly gross wage was 1.5% lower and the average hourly gross wage 2.4% higher. Since 1993, the average monthly gross wages decreased for the first time (compared to the same quarter of the previous year).

The growth of real wages which takes into account the influence of the change in the consumer price index kept decreasing in the 1st quarter. If in the 2nd and 3rd quarters of 2008 real wages increased slightly over 3%, in the 4th quarter real wages decreased by 1.3% and in the 1st quarter of 2009 real wages decreased by 4.5%.

In the 1st quarter of 2009, the employer’s average monthly labour costs per employee were EEK 16,512 and the average hourly labour costs were EEK 112.23 . Compared to the 1st quarter of 2008, the average monthly labour costs per employee decreased 0.4% and the average hourly labour costs per employee increased 4.1%.

Statistics Estonia conducts the survey of wages and salaries statistics on the basis of international methodology since 1992. In 2009, the sample includes 11,263 companies, institutions and organisations.
