Latvian Health Minister Quits

Latvian Health Minister, Ivar Eglitis, resigned yesterday to protest against the adoption of a new saving plan voted by the governement the day before. The cuts amount to €710 million and are supposed to be enough to unlock the€ 1.2 billion loan from the IMF and the EU. The governement insisted on the fact that it was necessary so that Riga could get these funds and avoid a devaluation.

Ivar Eglitis justified his decision by the refusal to implement such measures in the health sector, which could lead to the closure of several hospitals and hence the destruction of hundreds of jobs.
